Derek is Welsh born and bred, brought up in the seaside town of Barry. It was during the long hot summer of 1976 that as a boy aged 8 he became interested in the weather. After studying A levels at Barry Boys Comprehensive, he joined the Met. Office as an observer in September 1986 working mainly at Cardiff Weather Centre but with spells at Cardiff Airport, Birmingham Airport, and eight months in the Falkland Islands. After further study he became a forecaster in 1995, fulfilling a lifelong ambition. His first forecasting job was at Birmingham Weather Centre and then it was onto London where he had his first taste of TV, broadcasting on GMTV in 1996. However, a year in London was enough for Derek, and after working in Bracknell as an Environmental Consultant, returned home to Wales. Derek joined BBC Wales Today in September 1997. As well as preparing and presenting the lunchtime and nightly TV forecasts for BBC Wales Today, Derek also presents weather bulletins for BBC Radio Wales. Away from work he enjoys tennis and skiing plus trying to keep fit at the gym.
