    Book details

Peatlands are a fast-disappearing landscape. Countries are recognizing this situation and protective legislation is increasingly being put in place. This text brings together contributions which have been developed from the Peatlands Convention, held in Edinburgh. The book addresses two key questions: why should peatlands be conserved and how should this be achieved? The first question is answered by chapters that look at the variety and attributes of active bogs and peatlands throughout the world. There are contributions that consider the peat archive and look at how this contains informaton on the history of the site as well as material of much wider historical relevance. Chapters describing what people have done with peatlands are also included, along with debate about commercial exploitation of peat. The second question is addressed by a commprehensive section on peatland conservation. There are chapters on how to assess the resource. There are also contributions that discuss how to conserve active bogs, restore degraded ones and monitor the results. These topics are augmented by the inclusion of chapters that discuss the usefulness of legislative protection and raising public awareness. This book summarizes the situation regarding peatlands and bogs and sets the agenda for their future survival. This work is relevant for all environmental scientists and practitioners working with peatlands and bogs, and also to government policy makers and voluntary bodies involved in sustaining biodiversity.
